What you have read as our most popular articles were perhaps fragments of rushed papers, all concentrated and crammed within an hour or two at the most, in the hope for there to still remain some whiff of intellect, a dash of wit here and there, some informed seriousness perhaps. A Pandora’s Box which emanated with the scent of indulgent discussion;  from the ingrained fear of minority murder and the oblivion which accompanies it, to the beautifully aggressive strokes made by feminism and females in film who turn the tables of gory misogyny , this tiny box gave us everything, it gave you everything.

Imagine millions of muslims migrating to the land of the pure, fortress of Islam, leaving behind all their property and wealth for an unforeseen good future. The hope that one day they will be able to live in peace and harmony, and the future of their coming generations will not be jeopardised was sufficient to justify all their sufferings. Polarization acts as an insidious disease to society. Once any matter is affected by it, all nuances are consumed by this evil and all shades of gray are seemingly omitted to place various aspects and factors simply in black or white. Stringent dichotomies are produced and there seem to be no rational means to reach a conclusion. A recent example of such a polarized debate is in regards to Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy’s documentary A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness. Two opposing perspectives emerged; one that believed this film to be shameful for Pakistan while the other argued for it to have been a source of tremendous pride. Any other criticism or appreciation which was not related to either of the matters of “shame” or “pride”- was forced into these categories by default. However, some aspects beg to be reviewed and evaluated in isolation from the ongoing debate; for these aspects are not fuel to intensify the fire of any one side, but are in fact matters completely different. In the case of Chinoy, her team, and documentary- the aspect which needs to be evaluated in isolation is; the questionable ethics employed by Chinoy while filming her documentaries.

LUMS Council Elections 2016

This year’s much awaited Student Council elections were held on the 12^th of April. There was a display of immense energy by all batches  campaigning to have their representatives elected. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that the LUMS community is rather a divided community. While having people elected who would strive for the students’ rights, these elections have also become a way of proving a group’s influence and strength over other groups in the universiy. In the council, there are 6 seats from each of the 3 undergraduate batches, 2 seats for the senior law candidates, 2 seats for the MS students, 2 seats for the MBA students, and one seat for the PHD.

Pakistan and India have not had the best of relations with each other ever since their independence from British colonialism. With major ups and downs and efforts being directed and then redirected towards establishing friendly relations, it seems as though whenever things appear to move in the right direction, something will always stand as a hindrance to the formation of friendly relations, be it terrorism, espionage, or line of control violations .After that takes place, there is a certain degree of quietness in both countries in terms of relations. Peace talks with the neighbours are not high on the priority list of governments. The normalcy between the arch rivals prevails in the global community, that is, the two not get along with each other, to say the least.

Musharraf Should Thank Raheel Sharif

On March 18, the former military dictator Pervez Musharraf flew abroad in the middle of serious cases pertaining to murder and high treason. He had been prevented from leaving the country since April 2013, soon after he returned from self-imposed exile to contest in the general elections, fooled by his increasing number of followers on social media, and became embroiled in a series of legal cases, including a historic government-initiated high treason trial. What crime is more serious than high treason? What disease can only be treated in Dubai? But still the government and judiciary, despite their reluctance, allowed the general to departure abroad because they are still not capable to face the wrath of the establishment. Many viewed Musharraf’s trials as the first chance to truly address Pakistan’s long history of military coups since it split from India in 1947 and became its own nation. None of Pakistan’s army chiefs had faced criminal prosecution before Musharraf. The Army once again saved their man without a direct confrontation, although many believe the famous dharna, quasi coup, by an ethical politician and revolutionary cleric played a vital role in manipulating the behavior of government. This news signals towards the methodology of the mightiness of our untouchable Army, gifted to our country by God along with incapable politicians.
